Creating New Queries

To create your own query, right-click on the location you want to save the query, either "My Queries" or "Team Queries," and select "New Query." This will open the new query window which has tools along the top bar, the search parameters in the central field, and results at the bottom.

The Query window, with a toolbar along the top, search parameters in the middle, and search results at the bottom.

There are three query types that you can select from a drop down in the center of the toolbar. "Flat List of Work Items" is the default and will search all of the work items in the chosen project. "Work Items and Direct Links" and "Tree of Work Items" allow you not only to specify search parameters for work items, but also for the work items they are linked to.

There are four adjustments to the search parameter: And/Or, Field, Operator, and Value. And/Or designates a Boolean Operator. Choosing "And" narrows your search, requiring that results meet the prior parameters and this new one. Choosing "Or" broadens your search, only requiring that results meet the prior parameters or this new one. The "Field" category specifies which fields of the work items you will be searching. "Operator" designates how the information in a specific field of a work item must compare to "value" that you input as a search term. You may add a new clause to refine your search parameters by clicking in the empty row beneath the existing clauses. You can delete a clause by right-clicking on the grey box on the far left of its row and selecting delete.

Search parameters are deleted by right-clicking on the grey box at their far left.

Once you have filled out your initial parameters, click run query on the left end of the toolbar. If you have found the set of work items that you desired, you may save the query or save & close the query window.

To create new queries that are similar to existing queries, you can save some time by using the "Copy Query" tool. Open an existing query and click the "Copy Query" button in the right side of the toolbar.

The copy query button is on the right side of the toolbar, to the left of the save button.

This will open a new query that is identical to the old one. Make whatever changes are necessary and save your new query.
